Honoring James Baldwin Through Art: My Grandscale Mural Experience in Harlem

Creating a mural of James Baldwin as part of the Grandscale Mural Project with Uptown Grand Central a public art initiative celebrating culture, community, and creativity in Harlem. It was more than just an artistic opportunity it was an experience that celebrated history, culture, and the power of community through art.

Set in the heart of Harlem, this project brought together incredible artists, each contributing their own vision to honor great figures who have shaped our stories. My mural pays tribute to James Baldwin, a literary and cultural icon whose words continue to inspire strength, reflection, and pride within our communities.

The Creative Process

Bringing Baldwin’s image to life on the wall was both emotional and empowering. Every brushstroke felt like a dialogue with his legacy his courage to speak truth, his love for Harlem, and his fight for equality and human connection.

Standing beside the early outline of my James Baldwin mural the first strokes of a piece celebrating his powerful legacy through art. Each moment, from sketching to spray painting and adding the vibrant background, reflects the process, purpose, and emotion behind creating public art that inspires.

Despite long days and unpredictable weather, the energy from the community kept me going. Residents stopped by to share stories, express gratitude, and take pictures. Some recognized Baldwin instantly, while others asked about his story creating a beautiful space for art and education to meet.

Why It Matters

As an artist from the Bronx with roots in Honduras, I’ve always believed that art is a tool for healing, empowerment, and storytelling. This mural was not only a way to honor Baldwin but also to inspire future generations to embrace their identity, voice, and creativity.

Projects like Grandscale remind us that art belongs to everyone it transforms public spaces, sparks conversations, and celebrates our shared humanity.

Gratitude

I’m deeply thankful to the Grandscale Mural Project team for giving me the platform to contribute my vision and to all the artists who made Harlem’s walls come alive with color and purpose.

Creating this mural reminded me that when we paint our heroes, we also paint a reflection of ourselves our strength, our roots, and our hope for a brighter future.

Stay tuned for more mural projects and community art collaborations. I’m excited to keep spreading creativity and inspiration through every wall, canvas, and heart I reach.
